Resealable Polybags tolerances
The polythene film extrusion process involves blowing up a molten bubble of film and then cooling and cutting it to shape. This is a technically difficult process and is affected by external conditions (such as heat and humidity) and by the flexibility and stretchiness of the film. Whilst we strive to obtain exact dimensions, a degree of manufacturing tolerance is therefore always required on every product.

- Width:
Plus or minus 3mm (0.125") or 2%, whichever is greater. If you need a minimum width, please discuss with us.
- Length:
Plus or minus 6mm (0.25") or 2%, whichever is greater. Please note that all measurements are cut to cut and will therefore include a bottom skirt of about 8mm on end weld bags (apart from grip seal bags where length is measured from the grip seal to the bottom of the bag).
- Gauge:
Plus or minus 10%.

MOD 93-116
Prior to formal British standards such as BS5750 above, the Ministry of Defence was the instigator of quality standards in a number of industries. For polythene, the relevant MOD standard was 93-13 and Polybags was approved by the MOD under its contractor list number 19SP02. Polybags still conforms to the standards required under the latest MOD revision of this standard 93-116 issued in March 2000.

How to Wash Resealable Bags
Introduction
Resealable plastic bags, such as sandwich and freezer zip-closure bags conveniently store and transport a variety of food, household and personal items. These disposable plastic bags, however, clog up landfills and cause pollution during manufacture. Wash bags by hand and reuse them to take advantage of resealable bag convenience, while limiting the impact of the earth! Use the following instructions to wash and reuse your baggies.

Steps
- Step One - Turn the resealable bag inside out over a trash can. Shake out any crumbs or debris into the trash.
- Step Two - Swirl your inside-out plastic bags in a sink full of hot, soapy water. Use your regular dish washing soap. Drain the soapy water and fill with cool clean water.
- Step Three - Rinse the bags in the sink full of clean water with a swirling motion, or quickly rinse each bag individually under the faucet.
- Step Four - Hang the bags on a specialty bag dryer (see Resources) or on a normal dish draining rack.
- Step Five - Store bags flat and open when dry.
Tips & Warnings
- Treat the resealable bags like other dishes you hand wash.
- Most resealable bags stand upside down when turned inside out (with the resealable zipper area at the bottom). If your bags fall over on the drying rack, try hanging them on other dishes or silverware on the drying rack.
- Avoid putting resealable bags in the dishwasher.
- Ensure reused bags are completely clean before using with food.
- Rinse soap out of bags thoroughly before using with food.

Similar to the pull-open feature on baby and home care wipes, Kraft's Chips Ahoy! packages offer a 'Snack 'n Seal' resealable top that's unique among cookie products. The package won a Gold Award in this year's DuPont competition.
'Snack 'n Seal is a patented product packaging system that, through the use of technology and consumer insights, delivers a true innovation to the marketplace,' says Laurie Guzzinati, senior manager, corporate and government affairs at Kraft's facility in East Hanover, NJ.
The Snack 'n Seal package allows consumers to open and reseal the cookie pack from its top panel, rather than from the end of the pack, which is more traditional. The film consists of .7-mil metallized oriented polypropylene that gets extrusion-laminated to an extrusion lamination of 48-ga polyester and 14# white opaque low-density polyethylene. Graphics are delivered via eight-color reverse-gravure printing on the 48-ga polyester.
Kraft refers to the resealable top as a label. It consists of a 2-mil OPP facestock with a Food and Drug Administration-approved adhesive for direct food contact. According to Kraft, 'labels are created by rotary die-cut, partially deadened (to create a tab) and then printed with two colors to indicate 'lift here.' The labels are then applied to the printed rollstock, and precision die-cut from underneath.'

Asked about materials suppliers, Guzzinati could only say that the Snack 'n Seal project 'was done in collaboration with Sonoco Products Co.' (www.sonoco.com).
From concept to product launch, the total development time spanned approximately a year and a half. 'The impetus behind the development of the package was to improve consumer brand value by delivering a unique and innovative package to meet consumers' desire for a resealable, portable package that keeps cookies fresh,' says Guzzinati.
'Snack 'n Seal also addressed feedback from consumers regarding previous products in the marketplace and their frustration with opening and closing overwrapped trays and the tearing of packaging film, often making them resort to repackaging the product once it was opened,' says Guzzinati. 'With Snack 'n Seal, this is eliminated, resulting in a reduction in material waste from consumers not needing to repackage product.
'Many consumers have described the added benefit of being able to use the Snack 'n Seal package for other usage occasions, including on-the-go snacking and entertaining,' she continues. 'Adding the Snack 'n Seal feature to our products provided additional value and uniqueness in the marketplace by addressing key consumer dissatisfiers and providing a point of difference versus the competition with limited capital investment.'
Guzzinati says the Snack 'n Seal feature is now used with several 14-, 14.5-, and 15-oz varieties of Chips Ahoy! that retail for $3.39, and with three Fig Newton offerings that sell for $3.59

Food Packaging: Rice goes resealable
March 28, 2003Rice is the latest product to cater to consumer convenience with resealable zippers. Two-pound bags of rice sold by Lundberg Family Farms, a major supplier of organic rice grown in the U.S., features a resealable zipper at the top of the package. The flexible package is comprised of 2mil low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film from Progressive Packaging. The zipper is placed on the package by AMI/Recpro's TopZip system that places the reclosable plastic zipper on the top of the bag in-line after it passes through the Woodman form-fill-seal unit. Woodman's Spectra combination weigher, attached to the form-fill-seal unit, runs 50 bags per minute at the Lundberg facility. According to Steve Clement, production manager at Lundberg, the company choose Woodman because it was one of the few form-fill-seal machines that included a combination weigher. The four Lundberg brands currently in the resealable bags include Organic White Jasmine rice, Nutra-formed Brown Basmati, Organic White Basmati and Organic Sushi.
